Traveling by train in China is not only affordable but also convenient and efficient. For foreigners visiting or living in China, buying and collecting train tickets might seem daunting due to language barriers and unfamiliar processes. However, this comprehensive guide will provide you with valuable tips and methods to make your train ticket purchase and collection in China a smooth and hassle-free experience.
How to Buy Ticket Online
In order to purchase tickets online through the 12306 mobile app or 12306.cn, it is necessary to create an account. Prior to making a purchase, you will need to complete the registration process, which includes verifying your identification.
To complete the verification process, click on the “Go verify” button and follow the instructions provided. You will be required to upload two photos: one is a clear photo of your passport, and the other is a photo of yourself holding your passport.
If you want to purchase tickets for accompanying individuals, you will need to add them as passengers and go through the verification process as well.
Please note that the document review process may require 3 to 5 business days for completion, although typically it is completed within 2 business days.
In general, ticket sales begin 15 days in advance. If you are traveling on a popular route, it is recommended to plan ahead and make your ticket purchase early.
In addition to purchasing tickets online, there are alternative methods to buy tickets, including:
- Ticketing counters, available at railway stations or railway ticket agencies.
- Automatic ticketing machines located in railway stations or designated areas.
- Ticket hotline, reachable at (+86)95105105, operating from 5:00 to 23:00. Tickets can be purchased up to 4 days in advance.
How to Collect Tickets
If you have purchased your ticket online, there is no need to collect printed tickets for check-in. Instead, you can board the train by presenting your passport at the manual service channel.
Please be aware that the train security check is thorough, and it is important not to carry any sharp or blunt objects with you when boarding the train.
